WordPress Plugins are a collection of pre-made programs that you can download and install to add some certain functionality to your site.
Plugins allow you to add new features to your WordPress blog that don’t come standard with the default installation.
There are 1,000’s of plugins, most of which are free to download and install. For example, there are plugins for e-commerce, Search Engine Optimization, contact forms, ad management, spam protection, and sign up forms, image management, and many more.
Selecting and Installing Plugins
1. To access the “Plugins” Management area, simply click the Plugins menu on your Main Navigation Menu.
2. By default, you will be redirected to the “Installed Plugins” sub-panel. From here, you can choose from pre-installed plugins, if there are any. Simply click the “Activate” link to enable the plugin you want to use.
A new installation of WordPress has only one useful pre-installed plugin which is the Akismet plugin, as you can see from the figure above. Akismet is the best plugin to protect your blog from the very rampant comment spamming. Hello Dolly is not a plugin.
3. To add new plugins, simply click the “Add New” link. You will be redirected to the “Install Plugins” sub-panel. From here you can search and install specific plug-ins from the WordPress Plugin Directory.
